What is a funeral plan for over 60s?

Essentially, there isn’t a funeral plan tailored to those over 60 (or of any age).

Funeral plans over 60s are the same as other funeral plans available.

The only difference is that if you take out a plan over 60 and choose to spread the cost, then your payment term is likely to be shorter than the payment term for someone under 60.

The payment term is the specified period of time you’ll have to complete all your monthly payments and have the plan paid in full.

Funeral plans arranged through Reassured come with flexible payment options allowing someone in their 60s to spread the cost up to 15 years.

Why take out a funeral plan over 60?

There are a number of reasons why it’s sensible to take out a funeral plan sooner, rather than later:

  1. Peace of mind. Knowing that your loved ones are protected from the expense of your funeral and that the arrangements have been made as per your wishes
  2. Freeze rising funeral costs. A funeral plan allows you to pay for your funeral in advance and at today’s price, as all your services are guaranteed for when you need them
  3. Plan the funeral your way. Organising your final farewell means less worry for your loved ones when the time comes

Setting up a funeral plan is quick and easy as you don’t need to answer any medical questions or fill in a long application form.

All plans arranged through Reassured guarantee acceptance to all UK residents aged 18+.

Peace of mind

You may have thought about your family’s current financial situation and how they may cope with the unexpected cost of your funeral.

Even if you have grown children that are financially independent, would they need to take out a loan or use a credit card to cover the funeral costs?

This could be detrimental, particularly if they have their own family to take care of.

And, even if you have sufficient savings in place when you pass away your bank account will become part of your estate and funds won’t be accessible until probate has passed.

Probate can take from 6-9 months, sometimes longer, which means your loved ones still have to cover the expense in the meantime.

Your savings are also vulnerable to rising funeral costs, unlike a funeral plan which can lock-in today’s prices.

Freeze rising funeral costs

Since 2004, the average cost of a funeral in the UK has risen a shocking £130% and now stands at £4,417[1].

Based on future projections, the average cost of a funeral could reach almost £5,500 in just 4 years time.

However, taking out a funeral plan today will freeze these rising costs and protect your loved ones from higher funeral prices in the future.

This is because funeral plans arranged through Reassured are fully guaranteed, which means that no matter how much prices rise, your loved ones won’t have to pay any more for the services agreed in your plan when the time comes.

Plan the funeral your way

According to a recent report by Sunlife, 51% of people who have recently arranged a funeral felt pressure to get things right, in memory of their loved one.

There is sometimes pressure from other family members to organise the funeral in a certain way and/or pressure to spend more money on the funeral than necessary.

Making all the decisions for your own funeral could eliminate these issues for your family and give you more control over how much is spent on your funeral.

You’ll be able to choose whether it’s a religious or non-religious service, whether it will be a cremation or burial, if a minister or celebrant should hold the service and even what mourners should wear.

The details can be discussed with your funeral director and they’ll take care of everything when the time comes - allowing your family to focus on saying their goodbyes.

What’s included in a funeral plan?

All funeral plans arranged through Reassured include all the essential funeral services required for either cremation or burial, (excluding the cost of a burial plot).

This includes funeral director fees, which cover the following services:

  • Transportation, care and preparation of the deceased
  • Professional guidance and advice
  • All the necessary funeral arrangements
  • Funeral personnel such as bearers
  • Viewing at the chapel of rest
  • Provision of a hearse
  • A coffin
  • Free bereavement assistance

Unlike other funeral plans, all our funeral plans cover all essential third-party fees.

Third-party fees pay for the services separate to those of the funeral director, and include:

  • Doctors’ fees
  • Minister or celebrant fees
  • Cremation or burial fees

What’s not included in a funeral plan?

Costs not included in a funeral plan, and therefore would need to be paid for by loved ones when the time comes, include:

  • Flowers
  • Memorial or headstone
  • Catering
  • Venue hire
  • Additional limousine hire
  • Embalming

How much is a funeral plan for over 60s?

There are a range of funeral plans available that offer different levels of service at different price points, (but include all the essential funeral services as above).

This means you can choose a plan that best suits your needs and budget, (although it’s important to bear in mind that if you’re heading into retirement then your budget may change).

Funeral plans for those over 60 can be arranged through Reassured start from as little as £27.87 a month or £3,220 in full.

All funeral plans have a fixed price, however, if you choose to spread the cost over 2-15 years, then instalment charges will apply.

Take advantage of our award-winning broker service to help you compare the features and prices of plans available.

Choose how you pay

All funeral plans arranged through Reassured offer the following choice of payment options:

  • A one-off single payment
  • 6 or 12 monthly payments
  • Monthly instalments over 2 – 15 years (instalment charges will apply)

All payments must be kept up to date and the plan must be paid in full by your 80th birthday.

Passing away before payments are complete

If you choose to pay by instalments over 2 – 15 years and pass away after the first 12 monthly payments but before your plan has been paid in full, then your plan would still be valid.

This means your loved ones won’t have to pay the remaining balance of the plan and the funeral director will carry out their services as agreed.

Make the most of this benefit by arranging a funeral plan through Reassured.

Funeral plan over 60 vs life insurance over 60

As someone over 60, it’s likely your children have flown the nest and you may have finished paying the mortgage.

If this is the case, then life insurance may seem unnecessary as all your financial commitments are settled.

However, life insurance could also be used to cover the expense of your funeral and other associated costs.

For example, the cost of hiring a professional to administer the estate after you’re gone.

Life insurance isn’t considered as part of your estate, which means that your loved ones could receive a tax-free lump sum as an inheritance to spend how they wish.

As someone over 60, you may consider the following types of life insurance:

An over 50s plan is similar to a funeral plan as you don’t need to provide any medical information to secure cover.

One of the key differences between funeral plans for over 60s and life insurance over 60 is the long-term cost.

With a funeral plan, there is certainty of how much you’ll pay for your funeral, however, with life insurance you could be paying premiums for an indefinite amount of time.

Nonetheless, life insurance could be a good alternative to a funeral plan if you’re in good health and wish to leave behind enough to tie up loose ends.

Reassured can compare multiple quotes for life insurance on your behalf.

Life insurance for over 60s starts from as little as 20p-a-day, depending on your individual circumstances.

A funeral plan and life insurance

It’s possible to have both a funeral plan and a life insurance policy in place for maximum cover.

A funeral plan will allow you to cover your funeral costs at today’s price, whilst a life insurance policy could provide your family with some additional financial security.

Of course, whether this is an option for you or not will depend on your personal budget.
