What is a funeral plan for over 60s?

A funeral plan for over 60s allows you to arrange and pay for your funeral in advance.

It guarantees your key funeral services at today’s prices and avoids rising costs.

You can choose to pay for your plan in full or by monthly instalments.

Your money is kept secure in a life insurance policy or trust fund until it’s needed for your funeral.

When the time comes, your loved ones just need to make a single phone call and the appointed funeral director will take care of everything.

Why a funeral plan for over 60s?

Making the selfless decision to pay for your funeral ahead of time with a prepaid funeral plan can offer the following benefits:

Peace of mind

Planning a funeral and covering unexpected costs can cause significant stress and upset for bereaved family members during an already difficult time.

Knowing that your loved ones are protected from the expense of your funeral and that the arrangements have already been taken care of as per your wishes, can offer peace of mind.

Freeze rising funeral costs

Since 2004, the average cost of a funeral in the UK has risen 128% and now stands at £4,184.

Based on future projections, the average cost of a funeral could reach more than £5,000 in just 5 years' time.

However, a funeral plan locks-in today’s going rate for a funeral.

All the services included in a plan are guaranteed for when you need them, and at no extra cost to your loved ones, even if prices have risen by then.

Plan the funeral your way

Organising your final farewell means less worry for your loved ones when the time comes.

Sometimes, there’s pressure to organise a funeral in a certain way or to spend more money than what’s necessary.

Making all the decisions for your own funeral can remove this difficult burden from those closest to you.

What does a funeral plan cover?

Prepaid funeral plans arranged through Reassured cover essential funeral directors’ services for either cremation or burial, which include:

  • Transportation, care and preparation of the deceased
  • Professional guidance and advice
  • All the necessary funeral arrangements
  • Viewing at the chapel of rest
  • A hearse or alternative vehicle
  • A coffin
  • Full personalisation with special requests and final wishes
  • Free bereavement assistance

As well as funeral director services, each plan will provide a level of cover for third-party fees.

Third-party fees include:

  • Cremation or burial fees
  • Minister or celebrant fees
  • Doctors’ fees

How much is a funeral plan for over 60s?

How much a funeral plan costs depends on the level of service included in the plan and the plan provider.

Each plan offers a different combination of services at different price points, so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

Here’s a comparison of funeral plan prices from some of the UK’s top providers:

Basic plans Standard plans Mid-level plans Comprehensive plans
Co-op £3,020 £3,470 £3,870 £4,170

Choose how you pay

You can choose to pay for a funeral plan in full (one single payment) or you can spread the cost in monthly instalments.

Paying in full or spreading the cost over 12 months or less won’t incur any additional charges.

Paying by monthly instalments for 12 months or more will incur additional instalment charges and payments must end by a certain birthday, such as your 80th.

Contact Reassured to learn more about the flexible payment options we can offer.

What happens if you pass away before the plan is paid?

If you choose to pay by monthly instalments and pass away before your plan is paid in full, then usually your loved ones would have to cover the remaining balance of the plan.

However, funeral plans arranged through Reassured provide additional protection so that if you pass away before the plan has been paid in full, then the plan provider will cover the remaining balance.

As long as your plan has been in place for at least 12 months and your payments are up to date, then your funeral services are guaranteed.

Make the most of this benefit by arranging a funeral plan through Reassured.

What’s not covered in a funeral plan?

Costs not included in a funeral plan, and therefore would need to be paid for by loved ones when the time comes, include:

  • Flowers
  • Memorial or headstone
  • Catering
  • Venue hire
  • Additional limousine hire
  • Embalming

Most plans won’t cover the full cost of third-party fees, which include:

  • Cremation or burial fees
  • Minister or celebrant fees
  • Doctors’ fees

At Reassured, we can help you arrange a funeral plan that covers all funeral director services and third-party fees for either cremation or burial from just £29.49** a month.

This means a higher level of cover for your funeral and less for your loved ones to pay when the time comes.

Funeral plan over 60 vs life insurance over 60

The alternative to a prepaid funeral plan is a life insurance policy.

Both types of cover can be used to pay for your funeral services when you pass away.

The option that’s better for you will depend on your personal circumstances.

For example, if you’re a non-smoker in your 60s without any health problems then you could probably secure a low monthly premium for suitable life insurance cover.

Here are some key differences between funeral plans and life insurance:

Funeral plan over 60 Life insurance over 60
Guarantees to cover your key funeral services Provides a cash lump sum pay out if you pass away during the term of the policy
Guaranteed acceptance (no medical questions) Monthly premium calculated based on your individual circumstances, such as your age and health
Locks-in today’s funeral prices Sum assured (pay out) value remains the same throughout the policy (excluding decreasing term life insurance)
Flexible payment options. Payments end when the funeral plan is paid in full Fixed premium payments up until the cover expires or until you pass away
Control over funeral arrangements and how much is spent Pay out can be used to cover funeral expenses but arrangements wouldn’t have been made in advance

As someone over 60, you may consider the following types of life insurance:

  • Term-based life insurance
Provides a cash pay out if you pass away during the term of the policy. Ideal for covering funeral costs, mortgage repayments, bills, and daily living costs. Usually the cheapest form of cover.
  • Whole of life insurance
Guarantees a cash pay out when you pass away. Suited to those in their 60s who are in good health. Ideal for covering funeral costs and leaving behind an inheritance
  • Over 50 plan
Guarantees a cash pay out when you pass away. Suited to those in their 60s who may have a pre-existing medical condition, as acceptance is guaranteed. Small sum assured, ideal for covering funeral costs
