Golden Charter funeral plans

There are four primary Golden Charter funeral plans to choose from:

  1. Value plan from £13.59 per month
  2. Standard plan from £16.45 per month
  3. Select plan from £18.15 per month
  4. Premier plan from £19.34 per month.

As we uncover in this review, Golden Charter doesn’t cover third-party costs, they instead provide an allowance (either £800 or £1,100, depending on the plan).

But did you know that third-party costs make up approximately 30% of the total funeral cost?

This equates to £1,676 on average for third-party costs, so you can see that Golden Charter’s allowance leaves a significant shortfall.

Funeral plans arranged through Reassured cover all third-party costs and are fully guaranteed, even if costs rise.

Who are Golden Charter?

Golden Charter, established in 1990, is a leading funeral plan provider in the UK.

Their plans are accepted by nearly 3,000 independent funeral directors across the country.

Golden Charter is currently rated as ‘Excellent‘ on Trustpilot from over 1,000 customer reviews.

They’re also the only funeral plan provider recommended by the Society of Allied & Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF).

How do Golden Charter funeral plans work?

Golden Charter funeral plans work in the same way other funeral plans do, including plans arranged through Reassured.

With a funeral plan you can pay upfront for your funeral, either in full or by monthly instalments.

Why pay in advance?

Since 2004, the cost of a UK funeral has increased by a staggering +122%.

And research suggests that in just four years’ time, an average funeral could cost £5,120.

A funeral plan locks-in today’s rate, protecting your investment from any further inflation.

You’ll also be able to make all the necessary arrangements for your own ceremony, sparing your loved ones from this responsibility.

Most providers offer a number of plans at increasing cost depending on the level of service offered.

You should choose a plan based on what your budget allows with the appropriate level of service you require.

What’s included in a Golden Charter funeral plan?

Golden Charter payment options

As with plans arranged through Reassured, Golden Charter offers a range of payment options.

Golden Charter funeral plans can be paid:

If you decide to pay by instalments then you must be 78 or under and the payment term must end by the time you’re 80.

Or, if paying by fixed monthly instalments, you must be aged 50 – 80 when taking out the funeral plan.

Dying before your funeral plan is paid

It’s possible that you pass away before the full amount has been paid for your funeral.

Or, you may run into financial trouble and are unable to keep up with the payments.

If so, as long as Golden Charter has received 24 or more monthly payments, then the amount you’ve paid will still be contributed towards your funeral.

However, this is only if the remaining cost of your funeral with Golden Charter is settled by your estate or loved ones.

Otherwise, your contribution won’t be made and your investment will have been wasted.

By way of comparison, with funeral plans arranged through Reassured, if you pass away after the first 12 monthly payments whilst on an instalment plan, then all the funeral services on your plan will still be covered (and your loved ones won’t have to pay an extra penny).

What is not included in a Golden Charter funeral plan?

Generally, funeral plans don’t include the cost of a burial plot, this includes those from Golden Charter.

The cost of a burial plot will vary depending on the location and type of burial.

With a funeral plan in place, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss options with your funeral director.

They can also help you arrange the purchase of a plot (and a memorial if required).

With a Golden Charter funeral plan the crematorium of choice will need to be within 15-miles of the funeral director’s premise, or you may incur additional costs.

Golden Charter funeral plans don’t include essential third-party costs

Third-party costs, such as minister/doctor fees and cremation or burial fees, aren’t included in any Golden Charter plan.

Instead, they provide an allowance with each plan to cover these, (either £800 or £1,100).

It’s not guaranteed that the allowance will cover all the fees, which are on average £1,151 for a cremation and £2,497 for a burial (and that doesn’t include the cost of a burial plot).

Yet, a funeral plan arranged through Reassured will include all third-party costs.

And on top of that, all services are fully guaranteed, even if prices rise.

So, loved ones won’t need to worry about paying the shortfall for your funeral.

Golden Charter rewards

Customers can benefit from Golden Charter Rewards for a period of 12 months.

This includes access to various discounts for a number of brands including Costa, Argos and M&S.

You can also save on groceries, travel, home and garden, fashion, gifts, motoring and entertainment.

Nevertheless, it’s sensible to firstly decide on the best funeral plan for you, before making a decision based on any additional benefits.

Particularly if you’re unsure of the actual monetary value of the benefits before taking out a plan.

Golden Charter additional features

Notable features of a Golden Charter funeral plan include:

The option to transfer a funeral plan to a family member who has passed away before you.

This is possible for all payment options except for the fixed monthly payment option.

Also, if paying by the instalment option then the total funeral plan cost must be paid.

A funeral plan arranged through Reassured can also be transferred to another family member, as long as the plan has been paid in full.

If you move anywhere in the UK the funeral plan can be taken with you.

This may incur an additional cost for transfer at the discretion of the funeral director.

If you pass away abroad, then Golden Charter will cover the cost of the transportation from a UK airport to the funeral home.

Golden Charter trust

Funds paid towards a Golden Charter funeral plan are managed by The Golden Charter Trust.

The trust is separate and independent of Golden Charter.

Therefore, in the unlikely circumstance that Golden Charter goes bankrupt, the trust ensure your funeral is still covered and funeral director services are carried out as agreed.

How safe is Golden Charter?

Funeral providers aren’t yet regulated by the Funeral Conduct Authority (FCA); however, this may change in the future.

Golden Charter may not be regulated by the FCA, but they are approved by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA).

Although, all fixed monthly payments for Golden Charter funeral plans are held by a UK life assurance company, Phoenix Life Limited, which is regulated by the FCA.

Funeral plans arranged through Reassured are also fully FPA approved.

Furthermore, we’re an FCA regulated life insurance broker and therefore follow the guidelines applied by the FCA to our funeral plan service, to ensure your financial safety.
