How much cover do you need?

×

How much cover do i need? There is no one size fits all insurance solution, and the amount of cover you take out will depend on some highly individual factors. Your own personal circumstances such as the number and needs of your dependents, as well as how much you can afford in monthly premiums, will all influence the level of cover you decide to take out.

When assessing how much you think you’ll need, make sure to consider:

  • Debts you would like to have paid off
  • Outgoings your dependents will struggle with if you are not around
  • Spending you would have made if you were around, for example university fees or wedding funds
  • Any other expenses incurred as a result of your death, such as funeral costs or inheritance tax

For how long?

×

How long do I need cover for? Life insurance can run for the amount of time you request. Terms can be as short as 5 years, or can cover you indefinitely until you die (known as a ‘whole of life’ policy).

As a general rule, the shorter your insurance term is, the less your policy will cost. If you need it to run while your mortgage is being paid, you might be suited to a 20 or 25 year policy. If you just want it to cover the time your children are home, you might be able to settle for a shorter term.

Your Monthly Premium

×

Monthly Premium? This is the amount of money you will pay every month for your Life Insurance cover. Pick an amount that is affordable. If you miss premiums your cover will stop.

Please note that Over 50s premiums stop at the age of 90, but the cover carries on.

Have you used any tobacco products in the past 12 months?

Am I a smoker? In life insurance terms, if you have smoked or used any tobacco products in the past 12 months, you are classed as a smoker. Even if you only have the occasional cigarette on a Saturday night.

Many smokers move to using nicotine replacement products such as patches, gums or, more recently, e-cigarettes. While moving away from ‘dirty’ nicotine to these less carcinogenic options is certainly an improvement to your health, the insurance company will still class you as a smoker until you are completely free of nicotine for at least 12 months.

Keeping things quick and simple for you

Here are some assumptions we have made about your policy

×

· Level Term: Your quotes will be based on a Level Term basis. This means that you will have a fixed premium every month throughout the term, and the amount that will be paid to your family remains level too.
You can adjust this to "Decreasing Term" on the next screen, if required.

· Critical Illness cover: Critical Illness is designed to pay out when you experience a life changing illness, but one which is not likely to result in death. This type of cover will pay out for much more common illnesses such as heart attacks and strokes, and for this reason it is often relatively expensive to include.

You will be able to see additional quotes that included Critical Illness, the cover has been calculated at 25% of the chosen sum assured for illustration purposes only. If you decide to take out a policy with Critical Illness cover, please adjust the cover accordingly once you are in the provider's website.

Quotes are only valid for 30 days.

Prices provided are only a "guide price", which may change dependent upon the insurer's assessment of your health and lifestyle
