What is the cheapest funeral plan?

The cheapest type of funeral plan you can buy is a direct cremation funeral plan, also known as a ‘cremation only’ funeral plan.

These are the most affordable funeral plans because they only cover a cremation (which is cheaper than a burial in the UK) and they don’t include a traditional funeral service.

Some plan providers specialise in providing prepaid direct cremation funeral plans including:

  • Pure Cremation
  • Affordable Funerals
  • Simplicity Cremations

Some other providers offer a range of prepaid traditional funeral plans as well as direct cremation plans, including:

  • Co-op Funeralcare
  • Golden Leaves
  • Avalon Funeral Plans

In this guide, we compare the prices and features of the cheapest funeral plans available on the market for the following funeral types:

Please note, Reassured can't help to arrange this type of funeral plan. However, we can offer the SunLife Guaranteed Funeral Plan which is an insurance policy which guarantees to cover the cost of your chosen traditional funeral services after two years.

What is a funeral plan?

A funeral plan includes a combination of funeral services which you can pay for in advance, either by monthly instalments or in one single payment.

It’s an affordable way to cover the cost of your own funeral ahead of time, protecting loved ones from the financial burden when you pass away.

Your money is invested into a life insurance policy or an independent trust fund until it’s needed for your funeral.

Do I need a funeral plan?

A funeral plan won’t be the right choice for everyone. However, some reasons you may consider a funeral plan, or low-cost funeral plan, include:

  • To have better control over how much is spent on your funeral (average cost of a basic funeral in the UK is currently £4,056[1])
  • For peace of mind, knowing that your loved ones won’t have to plan the funeral or find the money to pay at short notice when the time comes
  • To ensure that your final send-off is carried out according to your wishes

While you could take out a funeral plan to have certainty that your final farewell is taken care of ahead of time, you may also consider alternative forms of cover.

For example, a whole of life insurance policy, an over 50s plan or a SunLife Guaranteed Funeral Plan (all which can be arranged through Reassured) are commonly used to cover funeral costs.

Cheap monthly funeral plans

It’s possible to make a funeral plan even more affordable by spreading the cost in monthly instalments.

Most plan providers will allow you to spread the cost of your plan in one of the following ways:

  • Over 12 months (no fees)
  • Over 2+ years (instalment fees apply)

Alternatively, if you have the funds available, you can choose to pay for your plan upfront in full - with no additional fees.

The payment options available to you and the maximum payment term you can get will depend on your age and your budget.

Funeral cover arranged through Reassured allows you to pay in monthly premiums beginning from just £19.18 a month.

Are cheap funeral plans safe?

Yes, typically funeral plans which are approved by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA) or protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) are safe to buy.

However, from the 29th of July 2022 the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will start to regulate the funeral plan market - which means even greater protection for funeral plan customers.

Funeral plan providers must apply for authorisation from the FCA by this date, otherwise they won’t be able to continue selling funeral plans.

Therefore, before buying a plan, it’s important to make sure that the plan provider has submitted their application for authorisation.

This information may be found on their website, or it can be found on the FCA website via the funeral plan provider application status list.

Funeral cover arranged through Reassured comes with FSCS protection and the SunLife Guaranteed Funeral Plan is an FCA-regulated life insurance policy.
