What is an Age UK funeral plan?

A funeral plan is a way of paying for your key funeral services in advance so that your loved ones won’t have to cover this cost when the time comes.

You pay a fixed price for your plan, either paid upfront in full or in monthly instalments, and this locks-in today’s funeral prices.

The average cost of a funeral has risen 128% since 2004 and now stands at £4,184. Not only does a funeral plan protect loved ones from costly funeral services but also protects them from higher prices in the future.

A funeral plan can also be personalised so that your funeral is arranged according to your wishes.

This will bring some comfort and relief for your loved ones whilst they’re going through an emotional time.

Each funeral plan provider typically offers a choice of three or four different plans, so you can find one that suits your needs and budget.

What’s included in an Age UK funeral plan?

The Basic, Ivy, Holly and Rowan plan offered by Age UK cover the following services for either a cremation or burial funeral:

  • Provision of a hearse to transport the deceased from the funeral home to crematorium or cemetery
  • Funeral director and personnel to attend the service
  • The option to personalise the plan with special requests
  • Free bereavement support

Funeral plans for a cremation funeral cover third-party fees (cremation fees, minister fees), excluding doctor’s fees.

Funeral plans for a burial funeral include a contribution of £1,220 towards third-party fees.

Age UK funeral plan, like most other plans, won’t cover elements such as:

  • Doctors’ fees
  • Embalming
  • Burial plot
  • Memorial or headstone
  • Flowers
  • Catering
  • Repatriation (transfer of the deceased from overseas)

Special requests

One of the perks of an Age UK funeral plan is that you can settle any of the smaller details at the time of arranging the plan.

Age UK funeral plans allow you to make special requests for personal touches.

For example, what flowers you’d like or music you’d like to have played.

Special requests can be added to any plan but may be restricted depending on the plan.

You can also pay an extra contribution towards the cost of special requests with an Ivy, Holly or Rowan plan.

Without a contribution, your loved ones will need to cover the whole cost of special requests when the time comes.

As with the Age UK contribution of £1,220, any contribution you make will increase each year in line with inflation.

Payment options

Like funeral plans arranged through Reassured, Age UK funeral plans have several payment options.

These include:

  • Pay in full with one upfront payment
  • Pay in 12 interest-free monthly payments
  • Monthly instalment plan over 1-25 years (must be paid by 85th birthday)

Please note: monthly instalment plan will incur additional charges.

Passing away during an instalment plan, (Instalment Promise)

Most funeral plan providers offer additional protection in case you were to pass away during an instalment plan and before all payments were complete.

This usually means that all the services agreed in your plan will still be carried out at no extra cost to your loved ones, if you were to pass away after the first 12 months of paying the plan.

As with plans arranged through Reassured, Age UK funeral plans also offer this valuable benefit, as long as all payments are up to date.

Safeguarding your investment in this way ensures that if anything were to happen to you during your instalment plan, the expense of your funeral is still not passed onto loved ones.

Secure your funeral plan with Reassured today and enjoy peace of mind that your funeral has been taken care of.

The Trust Age UK Funeral Plans

Age UK funeral plans, as well as funeral plans arranged through Reassured, are regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA).

The FPA was established to ensure that customers who purchase funeral plans are financially protected and receive the funeral they paid for.

FPA approved funeral plan providers must have a separate Trust Fund, managed by a Trustee, or a whole of life insurance policy to hold funeral plan funds for their customers.

The Trust Age UK Funeral Plans is the Age UK Trust Fund separate to Age UK Enterprises Limited and keeps your money safe.

The funeral plans arranged through Reassured also offer this level of protection.

Get in touch with us today and receive your funeral plan quotes for FPA approved funeral plans.

Age UK funeral plan directors

Age UK funeral plans work with Dignity funeral directors.

Dignity privately owns 800 funeral directors across the UK and have an additional network of 500 independently owned funeral directors.

If you choose the Basic Age UK funeral plan, you’ll only have the choice of 800 Dignity funeral directors.

The role of the funeral director is to provide (at your request) all the services required before, during and after a funeral.

All funeral plans purchased through Reassured offer a choice of over 1,000 funeral directors nationwide, so there’ll always be one local to you.

Age UK reviews

As of July 2021, Age UK funeral plans have been rated 4.5 out of 5 based on 1,575 reviews on Feefo.com.

This is a small number, considering Age UK funeral plans has provided plans for over 400,000 customers in the last 25 years.

In 2020, Age UK funeral plans were awarded the Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award.

Age UK funeral plan cancellation

The cancellation policy for an Age UK funeral plan is flexible, much like other funeral plans.

You can cancel an Age UK funeral plan at any time.

To do this, you’ll need to contact Age UK by phone, email or post, (see above).

If you cancel your plan within 30 days of taking out the plan, then you’ll receive a full refund of any funds paid into the plan.

If you cancel your plan after the initial 30 days cooling-off period then you’ll receive a refund of funds paid into the plan, less a cancellation fee of £249.

If your loved ones choose to cancel the plan after you pass away, then the refund would be made to your estate, which means they would have to wait for probate before having access to the funds.

The important thing to remember is that if you miss any instalments, then Age UK could cancel your plan and you’ll lose the price guarantee.
