What is serious illness cover?

Serious illness cover is a unique type of policy created by award-winning and top-rated insurance provider, Vitality.

It’s their alternative to critical illness cover and is designed to provide financial support if you’re diagnosed with a serious illness.

However, one key difference between the two is that serious illness cover includes a broader range of conditions (up to 174), including many that aren’t critical.

This means you’re more likely to receive a pay out with Vitality serious illness cover.

But is it the right policy for you?

Continue reading as we provide a full review of Vitality serious illness cover to help you decide.

How does Vitality serious illness cover work?

Serious illness cover pays out a tax-free lump sum if you’re diagnosed with one of the conditions listed within the policy.

The money can be used to help replace your income and cover essential costs while you’re on the mend.

Here are the key features:

Why choose Vitality serious illness cover?

Vitality serious illness cover could be a good alternative to traditional critical illness cover.

Here are some key benefits of Vitality serious illness cover:

  • Protection for up to 174 specific illnesses (more than any other illness insurance policy)

It covers a broader range of illnesses compared to critical illness cover, meaning you’re more likely to receive a pay out (even if it’s not a full pay out). It includes common conditions like cancer, heart attack and stroke, which account for most claims.

It also covers less serious conditions, like grade one cancer and pregnancy complications, which aren’t always covered by critical illness cover.

  • May pay out sooner than traditional critical illness cover

Vitality pay out a percentage of your cover (5% - 100%) based on the severity of a condition and the impact it may have on your life.

As they cover a range of less serious conditions as well as critical conditions, you could receive a partial pay out at an earlier stage of an illness, while also retaining the rest of your cover for future claims if your condition gets worse (or you develop a new illness).

With traditional critical illness cover, you usually need to wait until a condition is critical before being able to claim.

  • Claim multiple times (up to three times your cover amount)

If you make a claim and receive a partial pay out (for example, 25% of your cover), the rest of your cover stays in place should you need to claim again.

Depending on the cover option you choose, it’s possible to claim up to 300% of your original cover amount. This isn’t the case with traditional critical illness cover, which usually pays out in full for the first claim and then expires.

In 2024, 1 in 10 Vitality serious illness cover claims were paid to people who’d already received a pay out[1].

  • Additional protection options and free benefits

Serious illness cover automatically includes Dementia and FrailCare Cover, which provides cover for later life conditions after your policy ends (unless you opt out).

It also includes a waiting list benefit, which pays out for 24 specific surgical conditions if you’re added to the NHS waiting list.

You can also add child serious illness cover to your policy which offers up to £100,000 of additional cover if your child falls ill.

  • Access to the Vitality rewards programme

Vitality life insurance and serious illness cover policyholders also benefit from their rewards programme which includes discounts and savings for an array of UK brands, from Café Nero to Champneys Spa. It’s designed to help you keep healthy as well as save money on your life insurance premiums.

The programme is effective too, with 87% of customers reaching their recommended weekly exercise goals compared to 61% of the general population in 2024[2].

What are the drawbacks?

Vitality serious illness cover does have some drawbacks, which are important to consider when making your choice:

  • You may not receive 100% of your cover amount following a claim, but only receive 5% - 75% of your cover depending on the severity of your condition
  • Having different levels of cover (serious illness cover options 1X, 2X, and 3X) as well as a severity scale for pay outs could make this type of policy more complex than standard critical illness cover
  • It could be more expensive than other illness insurance policies on the market due to the number of conditions covered and the additional benefits it automatically includes (like the Vitality rewards programme).

How much does Vitality serious illness cover pay out?

How much Vitality serious illness cover pays out depends on your chosen amount of cover and the specific condition that has affected you.

Excluding pregnancy complications, each condition that Vitality covers is assigned a severity level which indicates the pay out amount for that condition in the event of a claim.

It goes from level A (most severe conditions, resulting in 100% of sum assured paid) through to level G (least severe, resulting in 5% of sum assured paid).

For example, advanced cancer claims are level A severity with 100% pay out, and stage 1 cancer claims are level D with 25% pay out.

Here we show the severity level and percentage paid out from your cover for each level:

Severity level Percentage of cover amount paid out
A (most severe) 100%
B 75%
C 50%
D 25%
E 15%
F 10%
G (least severe) 5%

In 2024, Vitality paid 88.6% of serious illness claims, totalling £44.4m[3].

The average pay out was £42,000 and the largest was £600,000[4].

Additional features and benefits

Child serious illness cover

Vitality child serious illness cover can be added to your policy for an extra fee. This offers up to £100,000 of extra cover if any of your children are diagnosed with a serious condition listed in the policy.

Dementia and FrailCare Cover

Serious illness cover automatically includes Dementia and FrailCare Cover, which offers protection for later life conditions after your policy ends.

You’ll need to keep paying your premiums for this cover, but this is likely to save you money compared to taking out a new serious illness policy which would require new medical information.

Waiting list benefit

Vitality pay out for 24 conditions that require surgery with the NHS.

As soon as you’ve been added to the NHS waiting list for one of the specified surgeries, you can make a claim. This means you receive an earlier pay out to help you manage financially while waiting for treatment.

Rewards programme

Vitality offer a reward system that encourages customers to get physically active and look after their health. It involves earning points through activities such as walking, swimming and cycling.

You can get access to a wide variety of discounts for brands that support healthy living, such as Apple Watch, Garmin and Nuffield Health. The more Vitality points you earn, the better the savings and rewards.

Customers can also reduce the cost of their life insurance premiums by taking part in the Vitality programme and building up points.

Waiver of premium

Allows you to pause your premium payments if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury.

Indexation

You can choose for your cover to increase each year in line with Retail Prices Index (RPI) to help protect the pay out from inflation.

Guaranteed insurability

This feature allows you to change your cover amount to suit a change in your circumstances. For example, you may want to increase your sum assured if taking out a bigger mortgage or having another child.

Vitality serious illness cover verdict

Vitality serious illness cover could be a good choice if you’re looking for comprehensive cover to help protect your financial future should you become ill.

While it doesn’t always pay out in full, it does pay out more often than traditional critical illness cover and could even pay out earlier as you don’t have to wait until a condition is critical before making a claim.

However, if you’re looking for straight-forward cover that pays out in full in most cases, then critical illness cover could be a more suitable option.
