Almost half a million people aged over 50 in the UK are still paying off a mortgage (SunLife 2025).

If you expect to still have a mortgage in your 50s, 60s or 70s, you may wish to leave a small lump sum to help your loved ones reduce the outstanding balance or manage the monthly repayments.

£
?

Around 26% of retirees have unsecured debt, such as credit cards, with an average amount of £1,750 (Interactive Investor 2025).

If you have outstanding debts, a life insurance pay out could help your loved ones settle some or all of them after you pass away.

£
?

SunLife’s 2026 Cost of Dying report shows that a simple UK funeral costs on average £3,858, while a traditional funeral costs £4,510.

Funeral costs can place added financial pressure on loved ones. An over 50s life insurance pay out is often used to help towards these expenses.

A life insurance pay out could help your partner manage household bills, everyday living costs and other expenses in retirement. It could also supplement their pension and provide extra financial support.

£

You may wish to leave a small inheritance to your partner, children, grandchildren or someone else close to you. The pay out is not tied to a specific expense, so they can use it in the way that is most helpful to them.

You may instead choose to leave a small donation to a charity that matters to you.

What is the best life insurance for over 50s?

An over 50s life insurance policy is a popular option for people over 50 who want to leave a lump sum behind for their loved ones after they’re gone, particularly to help cover funeral costs.

However, whether this is the best option for you will depend on your specific needs and personal circumstances.

As someone over 50, you may also consider term life insurance or a whole of life policy. We outline the key features of each policy below:

Over 50s plan

Provides lifelong cover. Acceptance is guaranteed to UK residents aged 50 - 85 and there are no medical questions, therefore, it’s often a good choice for applicants over 50 with high-risk factors such as a pre-existing medical condition or a dangerous occupation.

Available through Reassured. Premiums could start from just £5 a month.

Term life insurance

Provides cover for a set period, only paying out if you pass away during this period. Often taken out to help protect a mortgage and other debts. The application includes medical questions, but if you’re in good health, monthly premiums could be lower than that of an over 50s plan.

Available through Reassured. We can help you compare our best term life insurance for over 50s today, free of charge.

Whole of life insurance

Provides whole of life cover and provides a pay out when you pass away. Funds can help to cover financial commitments, like a mortgage, or to help cover funeral costs or inheritance tax bills. The application includes medical questions, but if you’re in good health, it could offer a larger payout than an over 50s plan.

Available through the Reassured advised team. Get in touch to compare our best whole of life insurance for over 50s today.
