A One Family over 50s plan is available to those aged 50 - 80 who live in the UK.

Over 50s plans are ideal for those later on in life, who may have struggled to secure life insurance due to ill health. The pay out from an over 50s plan is often used to help cover funeral expenses.

You can apply for a One Family over 50s plan online, by phone or through the post.

You can also secure a One Family over 50s plan by using our award-winning broker service.

We can help you through every step of the application process and answer any questions you may have.

You’ll be covered immediately after your application is processed and accepted. Once in place, your cover will last for life, as long as you keep up to date with your premium payments.

Premium payments stop after you turn 90

Once you reach the age of 90 you’ll no longer be required to pay your premiums and your cover will remain valid until you pass away.

If you stop paying your premiums before the age of 90, your cover will cease and you won’t be entitled to claim your money back.

As with most over 50s plans, there will be a waiting period included in your policy. With One Family, this waiting period is 2 years.

This means that if you pass away during this time, as a result of natural causes, a pay out won’t be made to your loved ones.

However, One Family will pay out 150% of the premiums you’ve paid up until your death.

The policy will also include an accidental death benefit, meaning if you pass away as a result of an accident (within the first 2 years) then 3x your cover amount, up to a maximum of £48,000, will be paid out to your loved ones.

After these two years, you’ll be fully covered for all causes of death, and you'll also benefit from terminal illness cover.

Depending on your needs and circumstances you can add additional policies to increase your sum assured, up to the total sum of £20,000 and up to the maximum premium payment of £75, (although any plans taken out before 01/01/2007 won’t be counted in these limits).

How much over 50 life insurance do you need?

Enter your financial commitments below to understand the level of over 50 life insurance cover you require.

£121,687 is the estimated average outstanding mortgage per household in the UK.

Our property is generally the largest financial commitment any of us will make.

Your life insurance should cover this significant debt should you no longer be around.

According to Money Advice Service, full-time childcare in the UK now costs £242 a week.

The loss of a parent could result in the need for additional childcare whilst the surviving parent increases their hours to account for lost income.

Your life insurance cover should factor in this additional required outgoing.

The average level of debt (minus a mortgage) in the UK is £15,385.

Factoring in any outstanding debts in your name when arranging life insurance ensures this burden is not passed to loved ones.

You may wish to leave your loved ones an inheritance or lump sum gift upon your passing.

Factoring in the gift amount when arranging your cover will ensure the pay out amount will be sufficient to provide your loved ones with this selfless gesture.

According to SunLife, the average cost of a UK funeral is now £4,417, whilst the total cost of dying is £9,493.

This is a 130% increase over the past 16 years and shows no signs of slowing down.

A significant cost which should be factored into the amount of life insurance you secure.

If you are one of the 65% of the UK who are lucky enough to have savings, this could be used as protection if you were to pass away.

Any pay outs from existing life insurance policies and investments can also be used as financial protection for your loved ones if you were no longer around.

Factor this into your required cover amount.

Making a claim with One Family

Claims can be made by calling 0800 028 112.

If your loved ones are claiming due to your passing, they’ll need to send One Family the death certificate or a certified copy of it. A claims form will be sent off on receipt of the death certificate.

The named beneficiary, listed within the policy, will need to complete the claims form and send it back.

Once this has been received, along with any other requested documents, the claim will be processed.

If you’re making a terminal illness claim you can do this yourself or a loved one can do this on your behalf using the same contact number.

Terminal illness cover

Unlike most over 50s plans on the market, One Family over 50s life insurance includes terminal illness cover.

Terminal illness cover is an additional form of protection that will allow you to make an early claim on your policy should you fall ill with a life-threatening illness and given less than 12 months to live.

Your policy will need to have been active for more than 2 years for you to be able to make a claim for terminal illness.

Once you have made a terminal illness claim and received the life insurance pay out your policy will expire.

One Family funeral insurance

A One Family over 50s plan includes the Funeral Funding feature, provided by Golden Charter.

This is a feature that will allow the proceeds of your policy to be paid to a funeral director to cover the costs of your funeral.

Golden Charter will also provide a £300 contribution towards the cost of your funeral.

If the proceeds are more than what’s needed for your funeral, the remaining balance will be paid to your estate.

You should be aware, that if your chosen funeral type is a direct cremation you won’t be eligible for the £300 contribution.

You also won’t be able to use this feature if you pass away within the first 2 years of your policy. Instead, 150% of the premiums you have paid will be paid out to your estate.

While this is a very generous policy add on, the contribution plus the pay out from the policy may not cover all the associated costs of a funeral.

The average cost of a funeral is currently £4,056 and the average cost of dying is now £8,864[1].

If you’re worried about your loved ones having to pay out of their own pockets for additional funeral costs, you may consider a pre-paid funeral plan.

A prepaid funeral plan allows you to plan and pay for all your essential funeral services in advance, protecting your loved ones from the full cost of the funeral when the time comes.
